Projects
Intra-racial Immigration Discrimination Analysis
In this project, I explored the complexities of intra-racial immigration discrimination in Europe. Utilising the European Social Survey (ESS7) dataset, I employed logistic regression models in R to analyse how demographic factors, social satisfaction, and attitudes towards immigrants influence discrimination. This project highlighted significant patterns and provided insights into the variations of discrimination across different European countries.
Colourblind-Friendly Maps
To ensure data visualisations are accessible to all, I created colourblind-friendly maps using R. This project involved developing maps that can be easily interpreted by individuals with colour vision deficiencies. Using the ggplot2 and colorblind packages, I designed visually appealing and inclusive maps that maintain accuracy and clarity.
Australian Wildfires Visualisation
I visualised the impact of the Australian wildfires using R, focusing on affected areas and their correlation with environmental factors. This project involved pre-processing large datasets, cleaning and organising the data, and creating detailed visualisations that highlighted the severity and spread of the wildfires. The visualisations provided valuable insights for disaster response efforts and future fire prevention strategies.
Invisible Women Project
In this data visualisation project, I examined the representation of female artists in art galleries and linked it to employment data in the US. Using tools like Tableau and R, I analysed the frequency of exposure female artists receive and compared it with gender disparities in various industries. This project showcased the underrepresentation of women in the art world and highlighted broader gender equality issues in the workforce.
Python Web Scraping for Flixable Website Data
For my undergraduate thesis, using Python libraries such as BeautifulSoup and requests, I developed scripts to scrape movie data from the Flixable website. The script navigated complex HTML structures to extract relevant information like movie names, release years, genres, and types. This experience enhanced my data collection and processing skills, demonstrating my ability to handle large volumes of unstructured data.
Data Colonialism and the Global North-South Divide
In this research project, I investigated the concept of data colonialism and its impact on the Global North and South. The study explored how data has become a new form of resource extraction and control, drawing parallels between historical colonial practices and modern data exploitation. By analysing case studies from China and the USA, I examined how these countries utilise data to maintain and extend their geopolitical influence. The research highlighted the role of social media platforms like Weibo and Twitter during the COVID-19 pandemic, illustrating how data is used to shape public opinion and control narratives. This project provided valuable insights into the ethical and political dimensions of data usage, emphasising the need for equitable data governance.
Empowering the Marginalised with Blockchain Technology
This project focused on the transformative potential of blockchain technology in enhancing financial inclusion and crisis response. By examining case studies such as the Leaf and Kotani Pay projects in East Africa and the use of cryptocurrencies by displaced people during the Russia-Ukraine war, I explored how blockchain can provide secure and accessible financial services to marginalised populations. The research demonstrated how blockchain can serve as a critical tool for identity verification and financial access in crisis situations, reducing transaction costs and barriers for unbanked individuals. This project underscored the role of technology in promoting economic empowerment and resilience, particularly for vulnerable groups.
